	Early Childhood Intervention and First Steps
	Indiana's First Steps and Bona Vista's Early Childhood Intervention program provide a system of early intervention for infants, toddlers and preschoolers with special needs. Early intervention involves parents, teachers, physicians, and therapists. Together this team develops a plan for each child that becomes the road map for the services the family and their young child will receive. Services are available to children with: Speech and development delays Vision and hearing impairments Sensory integration problems Autism Chromosomal abnormalities or genetic disorders Neurological disorders
	The delays/disorders must be assessed by two professional disciplines, for example, a physician and a physical therapist. They will then confirm the need for intervention to try to bring the child to the typical level of development. Through the Early Childhood Intervention program, free developmental screenings are offered to the public four times a year. Also entitled to services are infants and toddlers considered "biologically at risk" of disability. This includes: Children with very low birth weight Small for gestational age Asphyxia Complications before, during or following birth Children whose mothers' had limited prenatal care or prenatal substance abuse Services that are available through the First Steps program include: Developmental therapy Information and referral Special instruction Occupational, physical and speech therapy Social services Health services Family education and support Home visits First Steps is funded through existing services, local, state, and federal funding, Medicaid, and private insurance.
